This is the second week of the PAL Program.
The students learned to work in cooperative teams to problem solve.
Today they were to form a "dragon" and problem solved together to transfer a hula hoop down the line without removing their hands on their friend's waist.
We did a class activity on number bonds to reinforce the students' understanding of number bonds. The students have learned to relate number bonds in the concrete and pictorial form. Today they moved on to make their own number bonds using the Number Bonds Cards. Each student took turns and their partners were to check their answers.
By spotting their friend's error showed good understanding of their number bonds concepts.
We did a Math lesson on comparing numbers yesterday. Each group of students were given 10 colored coins ( counters) . These coins were coloured red and yellow on each side. The students were to toss the coins and record the number of red coins and yellow coins of each toss on their activity sheet.
They were next required to compare if there were more or fewer red coins than the yellow coins. In some cases there were as many red coins as yellow coins.
The noise level in teh class was rather high as the students got highly excited over the manipulative given to them. However, it was good productive noise as I could see that the students were really engaged. Most of my 1E students were able to work effectively in groups after giving them clear instructions.
I was even more glad to see students who completed their task faster were also learning to wait for their team mates to complete the same question before moving on to the next question together. It was a good oppportunity of them to learn to relate to their friends, to communicate effectively and to be working collaboratively.
Here are some pictures of the activity.
