The Health Education Department organised a Healthy Fruit Eating competition. Our photo was selected as the winner among the P1 classes. Each and every child in the class won a set of fruits and vegetables erasers. What a great way to end our Rainbow Day 2.
Hmmm....... how come there is no prize for the teacher who took the photo huh ? Heee.....:)
Can you spot our photo? |
Our class monitor, Jovan, receiving the prize on behalf of our class |
This is the photo that won us the prize ! Thanks for being great models . |
Here is another counting activity we did in class last week.
To reinforce the students' number sense to 20 and the ability to count to 20, they were given different bags of concrete materials like erasers, ice cream sticks, square tiles, toy animals cubes etc to count. They were then to record their counts in an activity sheet.
The class is usually more noisy when we carry out hands on activities. But I am glad that as I moved around, I observed that they were making "positive noise". I am also teaching them to use their "indoor voice " since their friends are close to them. Sometimes, in their excitment they forget.
Beyond just counting, the students got a chance to learn to wait for their turns, help their friends to count together and even packing the items back into the bags.
These activites will help to sharpen their 21st century skills - cooperation , confidence and curiosity .
This term for our class PAL program, we are having Performing Arts. The class will learn more about rhythm and beats in this program.
This week , the children started on a new mathematics topic - Numbers to 20. We did a class activity to recognise numbers from 11 to
In this activity , they worked in groups of 3. In each group, each child is either given the link cubes , number cards or word cards. I flashed different number cards on the visaliser and they are to pick the correspondent cubes, number or word cards.
Fo example, I flashed the card "10" and "3" and the children are to show me the following :
1. a set of 10 and 3 linked cubes
2. number card of "13"
3. word card of "thirteen"
The children then rotated the materials so that they each have a chance to work with all the 3 different learning resources.
Here are 2 challenges I noticed in this activity......
1. Students working with the link cubes showed me linked cubes of "13 cubes" all joined together. I told them their answer is correct but I wanted them to make 10 first then another 3 cubes.
I reinforced that they should show me a set of 10 joined cubes and another set of 3 joined cubes.
Parents , please note that learning to make 10 is an important strategy which they need later in addition and subtraction.
2. Most of the children are able to recognise the word cards but may not be able to spell the word. Please revise with them at home.
Some of the words end with "teen" so I taught them to recognise this pattern in the spelling. I have also given them a writing homework for this spelling this week.
Dear parents,
The pupils were issued the SMART card on 2 April. I have photocopied the SMART card for the pupils and have issued it to them this morning. They will be using the photocopied SMART card as their library cards.
They need not bring the original SMART card to school.
I have instructed them to keep it in their wallets. Alternatively, you may buy them a card holder.
The pupils are excited to start borrowing books from our school library.
Our class library period is on every Monday. I will bring them to read and borrow books on every Monday. Each pupil is allowed to borrow 2 books - an English book and a Mother Tongue book. They may also visit the library during recess to return or borrow books.
Kindly ensure your child return the books before the due day.
Thannk you,
Mrs Ow Yong
