This week , the children started on a new mathematics topic - Numbers to 20. We did a class activity to recognise numbers from 11 to 20 in various representations (concrete representation, numeral and words).

In this activity , they worked in groups of 3. In each group, each child is either given the link cubes , number cards or word cards. I flashed different number cards on the visaliser and they are to pick the correspondent  cubes, number or word cards.

Fo example, I flashed the card "10"  and "3" and the children are to show me the following :

1. a set of 10 and 3 linked cubes
2. number card of "13"
3. word card of "thirteen"

The children then rotated the materials so that they each have a chance to work with all the 3 different learning resources.

Here are 2 challenges I noticed in this activity......

1. Students working with the link cubes showed me linked cubes of  "13 cubes" all joined together. I told them their answer is correct but I wanted them to make 10 first then another 3 cubes.

I reinforced that they should show me a set of  10 joined cubes and another set of 3 joined cubes.

Parents , please note that learning  to make 10 is an important strategy which they need later in addition and subtraction.

2. Most of the children are able to recognise the word cards but may not be able to spell the word. Please revise with them at home.

Some of the words end with "teen" so I taught them to recognise this  pattern in the spelling. I have also given them a writing homework for this spelling this week.
