These few weeks , the class is learning about the Multiplication Tables .
For multiplication, it is important that the child does not just recite and memorize the times table.
Here are 2 teaching points to note :
1) Repeat Addition
I noted that some children are just memorizing the times table without understanding it.
It is important that they link the concept of repeat addition to multiplication.
For example :
For 5 X 2 = 10
They must be able to explain that it is 5 groups of 2.
( 2+ 2+ 2+ 2 + 2)
2) Grouping
It is also important that they are able to explain the difference between 5 groups of 2 and 2 groups of 5.
They will be required to explain the difference either through given objects ( eg link cubes, buttons etc) drawing or circling given pictures to show the groupings.
Do chat with your child to check if they are able to explain the multiplication concepts to you or explain the difference in grouping .
