Our class had finished learning all the units in the Maths 1A book. I decided to start on the new topic "Numbes to 40" from the 1B book during the last week of school. This will give us a headstart in Term 3.
To help the children understand the place value concepts of Tens and Ones, I got them to draw a tens and ones Place Value Chart on the plastic covers of their desks with their whiteboard markers. Many of them were shocked when I drew it on one of their desks as an example! (It is a classroom rule not to draw or write on the plastic covers.) I told them that it can be erased easily later.
Each pair of pupils were then given coloured strips representing "tens" and little coloured squares representing "ones". For each number that I wrote on the board, they were to display the corresponding "tens" and "ones' on their place value chart.
The partner will check their answers. The pupils took turns displaying and checking. They attained the mastery level pretty fast and were starting to feel bored after a few rounds.
With a big hundred unit square given to them, they were asking me to let them form bigger numbers. So we added the hundreds column to our place value chart. The children then went on to form big numbers like 165 , 179 etc . They got really excited.
Nearing the end of the lesson, Kai Zheng raised his hand and wanted to show me the number he had formed on his place value chart. He was able to form the number 208 on his place value chart using a hundred square , 10 tens strips and 8 ones squares. That was a "WOW" moment for me.The children never fail to amaze me at times.
Here are some photos I took. Hope you enjoy them.
