Here the pupils were using the base ten sets to help them understand the concept of regrouping 10 ones to form 1 ten when adding.
I used the same base ten sets to help them see the concept of regrouping in subtraction when regrouping of 1 ten to 10 ones is required. I got the class to demonstrate a few more examples that morning with the base 10 sets. Although it was time consuming, I felt it was time well spent as this is a crucial in getting them to see why and how the process of regrouping is done.
Most pupils were confident with the addition & subtraction "procedures ". However they will also need to explain clearly why regrouping is required in some questions to show full understanding.
